It's All in the Music: The Art of John Coltrane by Derek Ansell

It's All in the Music: The Art of John Coltrane [377]

Derek Ansell

[Music/Biography]

It's All in the Music is a guided tour through tenor saxophonist John Coltrane's recording career--one of the most significant of the major modern jazz soloists and innovators of the 20th century.

Veteran jazz critic Derek Ansell presents the man and his music, along with the important musicians who worked with him. His emphasis is on Coltrane's strengths and weaknesses--but he also draws attention to the lesser-known but significant early records. An appendix lists all of Coltrane's recordings, with comments and recommendations.

A full appreciation of Coltrane's music and the lasting influence he has exerted can only be fully understood in the light of what happened to him throughout the crucial years of his development. Coltrane was subjected to virulent criticism, particularly in the early 1960s but also throughout his career as a mature soloist and leader.

Derek Ansell's book is an emotional response to emotional music rather than a technical appraisal.

As one of Britain's most respected jazz critics, Derek Ansell has been writing about jazz for over 25 years, and currently writes for Jazz Journal International. He has interviewed and written about such leading jazz musicians as Charlie Haden, Roy Haynes, Christian McBrice, Roy Hargrove, and Terrence Blanchard.
