A Dropped Glove in Regent Street: An Autobiography by Other Means

Don Coles

A Dropped Glove in Regent Street is a career-spanning collection of Don Coles's personal essays and reviews. It combines the best of his published prose with vital new pieces on biography and translation written specifically for this book. Summing up decades of reading and travel, with exciting tangents through Coles's influences and major adventures, this collection also reveals Coles as one of Canada's most incisive literary critics, serving up fresh, unconventional reassessments of Greene, Mann, Tolstoy, Munch, Hugo, Frost, Flaubert, Borges, Camus, Orwell, and many others. Spontaneous, fizzing, and provocative, the book takes the form of a natural autobiography, and includes never-before-published accounts of Coles's formative early years traveling in Europe.
